In verbal fluency tasks, participants are asked to name in a limited time as many words as possible that start with a certain sound/letter (e.g., F ) or semantic category (e.g., “animals”). Language Dominance, Verbal Fluency, and Interference in Lexical Retrieval Language dominance is one of the constructs widely used in the field of bilingualism (Montrul 2015). It refers to “observed asymmetries of skill in, or use of, one language over the other” (Birdsong 2014, p. 374).1 Here we equate dominant language(s) with most proficient language(s). The aim of this study is to investigate the language dominance and gender differences in verbal fluency by Arab students in a foreign country.

We measured language use both by linguistic community (the English-majority-language community of Edmonton vs. the bilingual community of Montreal) and by whether the children separated their languages by the We investigated the consequences of bilingualism for verbal fluency by comparing bilinguals to monolinguals, and dominant versus non-dominant-language fluency.

Left hemisphere dominance was demonstrated better using the verbal memory task than the verbal fluency task (F1,19=4.41, p=0.049). Cohen's kappa statistic revealed 93% agreement (k=0.67, p=0.002) between LIs obtained from MEG sensor data and fMRI, the IAT, electrical cortical stimulation or handedness with the verbal memory task for all participants.

Our goal is to support the community of healthcare professionals providing cognitive rehabilitation therapy by regularly adding new resources for them to use with their clients. Subjects with high-grade tumors demonstrate lower language lateralization than those with low-grade tumors in both BA and MFG (p = 0.02, p = 0.02, respectively).MFG is comparable to BA in its ability to indicate hemispheric dominance for language using a measure of verbal fluency and may be an adjunct measure in the clinical determination of language laterality for presurgical planning. Additionally, the reliability of verbal fluency tasks as a measure of lexical retrieval or linguistic ability in sign language users remains unclear.

language proficiency was related to verbal working memory performance in was present when bilinguals performed the tasks in their dominant language.

Verbal (essentially lexical) fluency tasks have been applied to investigate language dominance and ease of lexical retrieval in bilingual and monolingual populations.

In 94% to 96% of healthy right-handers and 74% of left-handers, 2016-01-01 • Language dominance (balanced vs English-dominant) was determined using the difference between the English verbal fluency score and Spanish verbal fluency score. Difference scores between -4 and 4 were considered Balanced (n= 12 participants). The remaining 14 were English-dominant. We used multiple measures of language dominance: parental report, the ratio of standardized vocabulary scores, and the percentage of TEs generated on a semantic verbal fluency task.

Results: Participants generated the most items in category fluency tasks and the least items in emotional fluency tasks. Verbal fluency was selected as an objective measure of relative language abilities (Sandoval et al. 2010). Sandoval et al. (2010) tested semantic verbal fluency in the two languages of fifty-one Spanish-English bilinguals, and report clear language dominance effects on all response measures (including number of correct responses, Languages.
